As a Commis 1 – Cold Kitchen, you will play a key supporting role in the preparation of vibrant, fresh, and visually striking cold dishes. Working closely with the Cold CDP, you will handle mise en place, assist with plating, and maintain the cleanliness and efficiency of the cold station. This role is ideal for someone with solid basic skills who is ready to grow toward a CDP-level position in a fast-paced, culturally rich kitchen environment.Zama Zulu our traditional African themed restaurant at The Groves is a dynamic, upscale restaurant, featuring South African and South Asian inspired flavours, focused on delivering exceptional experiences. Assist the Cold CDP in preparing cold dishes, salads, starters, dressings, and more.
Handle mise en place preparation – chopping vegetables, prepping fruits, making garnishes, organizing cold ingredients, and preparing simple cold items.
Ensure all ingredients are fresh, well-stocked, and properly stored following hygiene standards.
Support cold dish plating during service, maintaining consistency, neatness, and speed.
Maintain a clean, organized, and hygienic workstation at all times.
Practice proper food handling, labeling, and FIFO (First In, First Out) procedures.
Learn and follow the presentation and flavor style of the restaurant, inspired by African and Zulu cuisine.
Communicate clearly with chefs and fellow team members to ensure smooth kitchen operations.
Assist with cleaning tasks, stock rotation, and inventory checks as required.

Requirements

1–2 years’ experience in a professional kitchen, preferably in a cold or prep station.
Basic knife skills and familiarity with cold kitchen tools and techniques.
Eagerness to learn, improve, and take feedback positively.
Energetic, hardworking, and reliable.
Good personal hygiene, grooming, and attention to cleanliness.
Strong teamwork and communication skills.
Able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Any nationality welcome – attitude and willingness to grow are key.
